**Chip** (00:00:00:01 - 00:00:05:12):
You did not have a single howler monkey at your wedding. Thomas. And I think it was a big mistake. Gen Z is.
**Thomas** (00:00:05:12 - 00:00:07:06):
Going bananas for the Bahamas.
**Chip** (00:00:07:06 - 00:00:13:22):
Jeff, I never realized that Billy Joel is only five five. We didn't start the fire. We couldn't even reach the matches.
**Thomas** (00:00:13:23 - 00:00:20:18):
It's our hero. We've been studying the man, Mr. Jimmy Buffett. It's time for Buffett. Facts close to refund Costa Rica.
**Chip** (00:00:20:19 - 00:00:21:23):
Loco for Acapulco.
**Thomas** (00:00:22:00 - 00:00:27:14):
Getting freaky up in Waikiki. I mean, this is like an episode of Seinfeld. Things are just coming together.
**Chip** (00:00:27:15 - 00:00:29:11):
I love it when an episode comes together.
**Thomas** (00:00:29:12 - 00:00:40:16):
What a burnt one. This is the sunburn podcast where we talk about comedy and tropical travel. To my right, as always, you know, I'm from Netflix on the series tires and his amazing stand a special move closer. It's Chip Chantry.
**Chip** (00:00:40:16 - 00:00:51:18):
And over here to my left is Mr. Thomas O'Brien, Emmy Award winning producer, writer, and my pal. Grab a float, put on your earphones and drift away. Grab them by tie.
**Thomas** (00:00:51:19 - 00:00:56:21):
Because it's great to be in the tropics with your boys.
**Chip** (00:00:56:23 - 00:01:10:08):
And please let reboots of the series Nip Tuck, entourage, and MTV say what? Karaoke come to a streaming service like Hulu or Peacock. Amen.
**Thomas** (00:01:10:10 - 00:01:13:01):
Hey, man. All right. We actually already got started.
**Chip** (00:01:13:02 - 00:01:14:14):
Oh, hey.
**Thomas** (00:01:14:16 - 00:01:24:08):
What up, burnt ones? This is the sunburnt podcast where we talk about comedy and tropical travel, and we just got too much good tropical travel news and hijinks.
**Chip** (00:01:24:08 - 00:01:28:21):
I would say too much great travel news. Just enough jinks.
**Thomas** (00:01:28:21 - 00:01:30:23):
We really have dialed in the high jinks, Joe.
**Chip** (00:01:31:00 - 00:01:36:04):
It's the exact scientifically diagnosed amount of hijinks.
**Thomas** (00:01:36:05 - 00:01:39:09):
One of us has a lobster in our shorts.
**Chip** (00:01:39:11 - 00:01:42:00):
Just one of us.
**Thomas** (00:01:42:02 - 00:01:46:12):
All right, coming up everybody, Gen Z is going bananas for the Bahamas.
**Chip** (00:01:46:12 - 00:01:50:16):
Chepe loco for Acapulco. That's in Mexico. But that's right. It sort of applies.
**Thomas** (00:01:50:16 - 00:01:53:10):
That's a great tune, though. A great sunburnt tune.
**Chip** (00:01:53:11 - 00:01:54:03):
Great tune.
**Thomas** (00:01:54:03 - 00:01:55:17):
We sing it around the house all the time.
**Chip** (00:01:55:18 - 00:01:56:06):
You should.
**Thomas** (00:01:56:07 - 00:02:03:12):
The FDA is finally going to let us have that good sunscreen. We've been shriveling up like raisins for no reason. Chip.
**Chip** (00:02:03:14 - 00:02:05:12):
Slather it down.
**Thomas** (00:02:05:14 - 00:02:10:22):
Bali has formed a dedicated government task force to give influencers the business.
**Chip** (00:02:11:01 - 00:02:14:05):
This is my favorite story of the week. Keep going.
**Thomas** (00:02:14:07 - 00:02:20:02):
Monkeys crash a wedding in Costa Rica. And then it turned into a rave chip strike.
**Chip** (00:02:20:02 - 00:02:22:10):
That. That's my favorite story of the week.
**Thomas** (00:02:22:10 - 00:02:26:14):
And the airline biz is in freefall and we have the numbers to prove it.
**Chip** (00:02:26:18 - 00:02:30:08):
Nothing like, say, an airline and freefall in the same sentence.
**Thomas** (00:02:30:08 - 00:02:36:11):
I did that on purpose. Plus, we got the hypochondriac corner buffet, fax fish of the week.
**Chip** (00:02:36:11 - 00:02:37:10):
And the Guinness Book.
**Thomas** (00:02:37:11 - 00:02:53:22):
And we're cracking open the good book, the Guinness Book of World Records. You can hit us up at the Treble in Paradise hotline by calling (310)Ā 845-6038, and it's my distinct pleasure to say that it's time for a good old fashioned slather.
**Chip** (00:02:53:23 - 00:03:14:04):
I love it, let's put it on. Let's get that sunblock ready to go. And I got to say, if you're calling in to the hotline, call it in. Leave your name or be anonymous. It doesn't matter to us. Tell us your most harrowing, your most, your funniest, your most embarrassing vacation story. Was it an embarrassing story to vacation?
Coming home from vacation? During vacation, I don't know. Did monkeys crash your wedding? We're going to find out. Tell us on the hotline.
**Thomas** (00:03:21:22 - 00:03:26:00):
If the animals interesting enough that crashed your wedding. We'll put you on the podcast.
**Chip** (00:03:26:01 - 00:03:27:11):
We will put you on that podcast.
**Thomas** (00:03:27:12 - 00:03:36:17):
We do love a nice animal story. We do have animal backgrounds. We both produced shows for National Geographic that were animal focused.
**Chip** (00:03:36:18 - 00:03:37:06):
Yeah we have.
**Thomas** (00:03:37:07 - 00:03:58:18):
Yeah. We love those little critters. We're so glad some of them showed up at a wedding. A destination wedding in Costa Rica, nonetheless. Yep. This is the sunburn podcast where we talk about comedy and tropical travel. We're already slathered up. You should be too, if you think those things should all go together. Stay tuned. Front desk.
**Chip** (00:03:58:18 - 00:04:03:20):
Hi, this is Mr. Chantry in room 308. Slight problem. There's a small fire in my room.
**Thomas** (00:04:03:21 - 00:04:06:11):
What? Get out of the room immediately. I'm calling 911.
**Chip** (00:04:06:11 - 00:04:11:17):
No no no no no no, no need for that. I'm just going to need more propane for my grill. I'm running out.
**Thomas** (00:04:11:21 - 00:04:14:15):
Mr. Chantry, you can't grill in the room.
**Chip** (00:04:14:21 - 00:04:17:23):
Then how am I gonna eat my shrimps? Chip? Saint Thomas.
**Thomas** (00:04:18:00 - 00:04:21:02):
Oh, buddy. If only. If only.
**Chip** (00:04:21:02 - 00:04:22:08):
You'll get sainthood someday, buddy.
**Thomas** (00:04:22:09 - 00:04:25:14):
I'm trying, I think. What do you have to do? You have to, like, be.
**Chip** (00:04:25:15 - 00:04:27:13):
First of all, you have to be Catholic. So there's the first.
**Thomas** (00:04:27:14 - 00:04:31:23):
That's covered. I think just being Irish allows you to perform a miracle.
**Chip** (00:04:32:00 - 00:04:33:17):
Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's. Yeah, you're good.
**Thomas** (00:04:33:18 - 00:04:41:03):
But I think you have to have a miracle that happens because of you or around you. And then it has to be authenticated and then you can become a saint.
**Chip** (00:04:41:03 - 00:04:42:10):
Is it three miracles you have.
**Thomas** (00:04:42:10 - 00:04:44:02):
To do? Oh, it's the hat trick.
**Chip** (00:04:44:03 - 00:04:47:04):
It might be the hat trick. I don't know, I'm not Catholic either, so I don't know.
**Thomas** (00:04:47:04 - 00:04:49:10):
What's the Lutheran equivalent of sainthood.
**Chip** (00:04:49:11 - 00:05:00:17):
I mean, I will say, like, I went to Saint Andrew's church, so I was like, maybe we have saints, too. I. I should know better, Thomas. I should know better, and I don't I don't the answer to that.
**Thomas** (00:05:00:18 - 00:05:06:11):
Yeah. Well, I you'll dig into your religious texts and get back to us next week.
**Chip** (00:05:06:12 - 00:05:12:15):
I'll go to all the little Free Libraries in town, see if I can find a Bible and do some digging. I do some digging.
**Thomas** (00:05:12:21 - 00:05:17:16):
Oh, man, I these cheapskates in their free libraries. Chip, can you even believe it?
**Chip** (00:05:17:16 - 00:05:26:10):
I do love the little Free Libraries, though. You just open that little box in front of somebody, you take a free book. I also like those boxes in front of people's houses, Thomas, where you can, like, take free mail.
**Thomas** (00:05:26:14 - 00:05:27:07):
Yeah.
**Chip** (00:05:27:08 - 00:05:29:10):
Christmas time. I clean up with those.
**Thomas** (00:05:29:11 - 00:05:32:21):
Yeah. And that Amazon company that gives you free packages.
**Chip** (00:05:32:22 - 00:05:38:19):
You free packages right on people's front doorsteps. You just they're free. It's kind of great.
**Thomas** (00:05:38:21 - 00:05:42:01):
It's episode 66 of the sunbird podcast.
**Chip** (00:05:42:02 - 00:05:43:06):
Route 66 baby.
**Thomas** (00:05:43:07 - 00:05:58:06):
Route 66. And I can't tell you, dude, I've been. So we've been planning our next round of tropical trips. Yeah, nothing to announce today yet, but it's just got me in that headspace. Dude, we've always talked about it. Yeah, a huge portion of the fun is looking forward.
**Chip** (00:05:58:06 - 00:06:03:19):
To it. Yeah, and we're starting that. We're starting that that evolution up right now. I'm very excited.
**Thomas** (00:06:03:19 - 00:06:08:21):
I know it's just like when we get a slather going, it's so purposeful. Now.
**Chip** (00:06:08:23 - 00:06:23:16):
Speaking of route 66, I have to say this. Going back to that real quickly, okay, I have to give a shout out and you can follow it to Thomas if you want to on Instagram. I'm pretty sure they have an Instagram. This is not exactly tropical, but it's tropical adjacent. You know that I love the state of Maine.
**Thomas** (00:06:23:16 - 00:06:24:20):
Specifically Portland.
**Chip** (00:06:25:01 - 00:06:46:01):
Portland, but also Bar Harbor. I grew up going to the Bar Harbor area, I. Right, right right right right. Little town called Surrey, Maine, outside of Ellsworth, which is outside of Bar Harbor. And so little place on the water we go to is our friends live up there and they are Mainers. And but we would go to Bar Harbor, and every time we go to Bar Harbor, we go to a restaurant called route 66.
Tom. Like, this is like right up your alley.
**Thomas** (00:06:48:16 - 00:06:49:15):
I'm here for.
**Chip** (00:06:49:15 - 00:07:12:15):
It because everything in Bar Harbor is very quaint, very cool. I don't think they have any chain restaurants, like, like fast food. That type of thing is like, yeah, this is a restaurant that it's as big old building, I think maybe was a church or converted, or at least they brought some, like stained glass or whatever. But it's this big kind of high ceiling and this restaurant, and it's just like really good food.
Like, I don't say diner food. I love a diner, but it's a little more elevated than that. But it's like seafood burgers, you know, whatever you want. Kind of amazing milkshakes. And. But the thing about it is it's route 66, so it's kind of themed in the 50s and 60s. So it just has my favorite thing in the world, a restaurant, just crazy stuff on the walls.
Like, yeah, old advertisements from the 50s, toys from the 50s and 60s like mid-century stuff. And then you even go up and there's like a little sort of balcony, kind of loft where you can sit. But then there's this train that goes like a toy train that goes all the way around that you can actually activate from the men's room.
I don't want to tell too much more. That's a little while. But Thomas, I feel like you would love route 66, a Bar Harbor. Just the food's amazing, and it's like, I just want to. It's like a museum. I just like walking around, staring at stuff.
**Thomas** (00:08:07:09 - 00:08:20:11):
As a father who's in the potty training realm. Yes. When I hear that there's an A train that's activated from the restroom, I'm like, is this positive reinforcement for flushing? I think it probably is.
**Chip** (00:08:20:12 - 00:08:22:22):
Choo choo train adjacent right there, buddy. Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:08:22:23 - 00:08:30:08):
Nice. Dude. That's a great idea, I love it. What was that baseball themed restaurant we used to go to in Stamford?
**Chip** (00:08:30:10 - 00:08:37:07):
Oh, Bobby vs Bobby. It was Bobby. Bobby Valentine's in Stamford, Connecticut.
**Thomas** (00:08:37:08 - 00:08:43:09):
Yeah. If you wanted a breakfast burrito, you would order it off the portion of the menu called the Mexican League.
**Chip** (00:08:43:14 - 00:08:44:01):
There.
**Thomas** (00:08:44:02 - 00:08:44:10):
Turkey.
**Chip** (00:08:44:10 - 00:08:59:05):
Burgers smelled like vomit and service plus. And it was buddy as Bobby Valentine, the old baseball player and coach, I guess. And there was just just very random baseball stuff skewed, strewn, strewn through the restaurant.
**Thomas** (00:08:59:05 - 00:09:04:13):
And we had a we had a coworker who would often get two vodka sodas at a lunch there.
**Chip** (00:09:04:15 - 00:09:06:16):
Yes.
**Thomas** (00:09:06:18 - 00:09:10:18):
Who were on fire. It was 5:00 somewhere.
**Chip** (00:09:10:21 - 00:09:11:09):
It was.
**Thomas** (00:09:11:10 - 00:09:16:00):
Yeah. All right, buddy, this we're going to get into it. This is called for the yell.
**Chip** (00:09:16:00 - 00:09:17:17):
Go for the owl go.
**Thomas** (00:09:17:18 - 00:09:30:05):
A segment where we tell you about tropical news. But also keep in mind what the robot overlords would like for you to hear, because if they like it, they show it to Mario.
**Chip** (00:09:30:06 - 00:09:30:23):
Exactly.
**Thomas** (00:09:31:00 - 00:09:42:15):
All right, buddy, we're starting off hot and heavy. Nice tropical story here. Finally, Gen Z and you agree on something, Chip. They love the Bahamas, baby.
**Chip** (00:09:42:16 - 00:09:48:08):
Love those Bahamas. Yeah. That's their that's their new spot. I guess Gen Z is going to the Bahamas.
**Thomas** (00:09:48:08 - 00:10:11:16):
I'm a dais. And the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association are reporting that the Bahamas are the number one spot in the Caribbean for Gen Z and Gen Alpha travelers, and their newly released 2026 Caribbean Travel Trends report. Can you imagine being under 26 years old and going on a tropical vacation?
**Chip** (00:10:11:17 - 00:10:16:11):
I was under 26 and went to the Bahamas for free.
**Thomas** (00:10:16:12 - 00:10:18:09):
Was this the Make-A-Wish?
**Chip** (00:10:18:11 - 00:10:20:21):
Yeah. But then the the rash cleared up.
**Thomas** (00:10:20:22 - 00:10:24:03):
Oh, yeah. I mean, you were really scaling.
**Chip** (00:10:24:07 - 00:10:26:08):
It was very scaly for a little while. It's a little touch and.
**Thomas** (00:10:26:08 - 00:10:27:18):
Go, tell me about this trip. How did you go.
**Chip** (00:10:27:18 - 00:10:44:16):
For free? Because it was a work trip. I was I was working for a small company. It was. It was our friends dad who owned this company. He did like corporate training, corporate team building. And he did all these, like, I think I've told you about, like, the wacky. Like he had like, 200 hula hoops and like, a rock climbing wall and like, all this, you know, like all this, like corporate stuff.
And it was some of the top CEOs from it was like this company that would send CEOs into like failing companies to like, save them. Right? This was the early 2000, and this was like literally I was doing these like hula hoop games with the acting CEO of Enron. It was wild.
**Thomas** (00:11:06:17 - 00:11:11:18):
You taught the Halliburton CEO had a devil stick. There were.
**Chip** (00:11:11:20 - 00:11:22:03):
Armed security guards around our goofy little play area because these guys were so rich, like they were worried about kidnaping and that type of thing.
**Thomas** (00:11:22:03 - 00:11:23:14):
And wild.
**Chip** (00:11:23:15 - 00:11:36:23):
They literally tried to bribe me with the answers to these team building things. They're like, I'll give you $400 if you just tell me how to do this quickly. And I'm like, no, I'm not doing that. Like you have to say, because they don't necessarily know how to work as a team. Surprisingly, yeah.
**Thomas** (00:11:36:23 - 00:11:37:15):
There's sharks.
**Chip** (00:11:37:15 - 00:11:38:19):
Buddies, giant CEOs.
**Thomas** (00:11:38:19 - 00:11:40:01):
Yeah. That's hilarious.
**Chip** (00:11:40:02 - 00:12:05:07):
And then the one night I, I kind of went off on my own. And, you know, all of your stuff is just on the room key or whatever. You just pay for everything that way. And the guys there just wasted the one night and they bump into me literally in this, there was this, like walkway, this like underground hallway that was underneath this like, aquarium thing where, like, sharks are swimming over top of you, like one of those things.
That's underneath the water. Yeah. And they bump into me in there wasted like it's chip. It's the.
Guy, the helper. They're like, Chip, whatever you want. Just put on. It's all going on there. You buy, you get whatever you want.
For dinner tonight. I got two lobster dinner at night. Thomas, who had a couple of drinking drinks, speaking of vodka sodas. And then I remember sitting down, they had a. It was at the Atlantis resort. Beautiful resort.
**Thomas** (00:12:25:18 - 00:12:26:13):
Oh, yeah.
**Chip** (00:12:26:19 - 00:12:38:23):
They had a look casino. And I sat down to play blackjack, which I'm not a blackjack player like. I understand the rules, but, like, I'm not good. But I sat down and I looked two people over was Mike Myers.
**Thomas** (00:12:39:03 - 00:12:40:14):
Wow. Get out.
**Chip** (00:12:40:16 - 00:12:46:21):
Mike Myers I gave him a little nod. He gave me a little nodded smile, and then I busted and had to leave because I didn't have any money left.
**Thomas** (00:12:46:22 - 00:12:56:19):
What was Mike Myers like? Do you remember? What was his mood? How did he carry himself at the table? Was he Mike Myers or was he just trying to be a guy losing money?
**Chip** (00:12:56:21 - 00:13:12:13):
He was just trying to be a guy. And that's it was like my first time. Like, I really could have because I was probably 23, 24 years old. I really could have fanboy out and be like a thing. But I had the wherewithal just I remember I just gave him a little like, kind of like sort of like a little fist, like, you know, hey, man.
And he's just like, hey, man. And that was it. And then it was just like we acknowledged each other. And then moving on, you could tell he seemed like a very nice guy, but just seems he was there with a lady friend of his wife. I don't know who was, but like, just wanted to do his thing.
**Thomas** (00:13:25:09 - 00:13:27:05):
She might have been an ax murderer.
**Chip** (00:13:27:07 - 00:13:44:09):
And he may have just married her. I don't know, underrated movie, by the way. So I married an ax murder. It just puts me in a vibe of 1993 or whatever it came out. It's just a great soundtrack. Fun little movie. I love Mia, so I married an ax murderer.
**Thomas** (00:13:44:09 - 00:13:56:18):
Another question about these fat cats CEOs, chip, who you've always had a rapport with. I didn't know what goes this far back. Yeah. Did you have the pleasure of explaining to any of them who the spin doctors were?
**Chip** (00:13:56:18 - 00:14:09:14):
I did, I got to tell them, look, look, guys, you need to get Pocketful of Kryptonite. Listen to the whole album, and they listen to me. It was a different time back then. We're talking about this in 2001, you know? Yeah. It's, it was different.
**Thomas** (00:14:09:14 - 00:14:32:18):
Times adjusting for age. About the time you're talking about, I ran into Tim Meadows. Oh, at at a little party. And I was very until. And I brought up the ladies man about six times, and on the fourth time he said, all right, man, that's enough. Two more times.
**Chip** (00:14:32:20 - 00:14:34:02):
Two. Just two more times.
**Thomas** (00:14:34:03 - 00:14:36:10):
But but I love the ladies, man. What else was I going to talk about?
**Chip** (00:14:36:10 - 00:14:37:17):
I mean, come on.
**Thomas** (00:14:37:19 - 00:14:47:11):
Which is why you're better with famous people than I am. You're better with CEOs than I am. You're very, very good. But back to we're in these CEOs under 26, chip.
**Chip** (00:14:47:12 - 00:14:50:03):
None of them. They were old men okay.
**Thomas** (00:14:50:03 - 00:15:03:15):
Yeah. So this is the trend. This is where it's starting to become different. The Bahamas commands 26% share of all Gen Z and Gen Alpha travelers that arrive in the Caribbean.
**Chip** (00:15:03:16 - 00:15:04:23):
That's a steep amount right there.
**Thomas** (00:15:05:00 - 00:15:30:12):
The broader Caribbean is navigating a serious slowdown. Overall demands grew just by 1% this year, down from 21 and 8% the two previous years. So like it was on a rocket ship, now it's leveling out and everybody's kind of fighting for real estate for this next generation traveler. Yeah. And it appears the Bahamas are winning out right now.
**Chip** (00:15:30:14 - 00:15:33:21):
I mean, I believe geographically they're the closest to the US.
**Thomas** (00:15:33:22 - 00:15:58:16):
I think that makes sense. I'm sure there's some price demographics that have kind of switched around. I heard a Caribbean island, mentioned on a TV show, just like a bunch of super rich people that I didn't really know about it. I've heard about it before, and they did some research, and they, like, make it almost impossible for regular people to go visit this specific island they want to keep, like the ultra wealthy on there.
Yeah, the Bahamas are moving the other direction. And an interesting thing about the slowdown in arrivals has like shifted the conversation when it comes to hospitality from the volume. Like they don't they're not asking how many people are coming anymore. That was it for a long time. It was just going up, up, up. Now they're really trying to figure out who's coming.
They need to cater their experiences and their offerings to the people who are actually going to be there to try and win more of those dollars, instead of just getting sprayed with a tourist firehose.
**Chip** (00:16:31:15 - 00:16:46:19):
Right? Yeah. Like, yeah, just focus on what they want. And then I think we've we've talked about this in other episodes, the younger generation, they're looking for maybe more experiential things they're looking for maybe not quite as fancy.
**Thomas** (00:16:46:21 - 00:16:47:14):
Yeah.
**Chip** (00:16:47:16 - 00:17:05:05):
Accommodations as. Yeah other generation. So it's like but but maybe like fancy in a different way. Like they might, you know, they don't need the five star hotel experience, but they want like a sort of a fancier and extensive excursion out somewhere ziplining.
**Thomas** (00:17:05:09 - 00:17:08:00):
I hope they're still having a pina colada or two chip.
**Chip** (00:17:08:01 - 00:17:09:03):
I would hope so.
**Thomas** (00:17:09:04 - 00:17:11:22):
I mean, I get it, leave it out of your regular life.
**Chip** (00:17:11:23 - 00:17:14:16):
Or at least like a pina colada flavored vape.
**Thomas** (00:17:14:17 - 00:17:17:08):
I don't know, man, I don't know.
**Chip** (00:17:17:10 - 00:17:22:02):
Hey, they're going there. I, I like the promise they. That's good for the Bahamas. I say that.
**Thomas** (00:17:22:04 - 00:17:26:10):
For the Bahamas. Good for the people that get there. You got to get some salt water on that skin, buddy.
**Chip** (00:17:26:12 - 00:17:26:17):
Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:17:26:17 - 00:17:50:12):
You do. So I'm pumped up. Gen z, Gen Alpha, you don't really have a choice. I think Gen Alpha, the oldest gen alpha is like 15 right now, so they're not really picking the destination. So it sounds like younger families might be going on these trips to okay. It feels very budget related. I would have to imagine it correlates to the spend of of what it costs to have a good time there.
But hats off to you, Bahamas. You're taking care of business. You're taking care of our younger travelers and ensuring the next generation of Bert ones has a nice landing spot in the Caribbean.
**Chip** (00:18:04:01 - 00:18:05:01):
Baby boom.
**Thomas** (00:18:05:02 - 00:18:08:23):
I love it. So remember when there was just pirates in the Caribbean? Now there's young people.
**Chip** (00:18:09:01 - 00:18:20:22):
Yeah, they made a number of movies about it. I think maybe young people in the Caribbean. That could be a movie that's actually a documentary I saw on Netflix, really scathing towards some top brass. I will say that.
**Thomas** (00:18:20:23 - 00:18:29:02):
Oh, okay. Yeah. Moving on, Chip, now we're going to talk about something near and dear to our heart. What do we love more than a nice slather?
**Chip** (00:18:29:03 - 00:18:30:02):
Marshmallows.
**Thomas** (00:18:30:03 - 00:18:32:04):
We like marshmallows more than slathering.
**Chip** (00:18:32:05 - 00:18:34:10):
I don't know. It's just something I like.
**Thomas** (00:18:34:10 - 00:18:37:17):
Marshall. Mathers. Slavers.
**Chip** (00:18:37:19 - 00:18:39:12):
Slavers. I think that's what.
**Thomas** (00:18:39:12 - 00:18:44:22):
It is. Yeah. Marshmallows are nice, I guess. Do you like to roast them? What's your roasting? Oh, philosophy.
**Chip** (00:18:45:02 - 00:18:58:07):
I less is more generally. Yeah. It's. You got to take time with it. You don't go in for the burn. The char. Yeah. Take your time. Let it brown. And then that's that's the way to do it.
**Thomas** (00:18:58:08 - 00:19:05:20):
Yeah. It's like tanning. You really want to. You're going to be a lot better off if you get get that color up slow.
**Chip** (00:19:05:22 - 00:19:13:18):
Also, take the bark off the branch that you're using. Like if you're just branch for the tree, you don't need bark stuck in there like.
**Thomas** (00:19:13:20 - 00:19:15:03):
A little pocket knife.
**Chip** (00:19:15:05 - 00:19:18:06):
Leave it down a little bit. Make it like make it nice.
**Thomas** (00:19:18:07 - 00:19:28:08):
Yeah, make it nice. Maybe get a little char on the raw wood there. Seal it up. Did you ever know one of those psychopaths that would just dip it right in the fire?
**Chip** (00:19:28:09 - 00:19:29:04):
Yeah. There.
**Thomas** (00:19:29:10 - 00:19:33:10):
And eat the eat the burnt skin off and then dip it back in the fire.
**Chip** (00:19:33:11 - 00:19:52:19):
Oh, I never knew what. Dip it. That's a that's a special level psychopath. Is it. Back in for a second, char. Like, I know my little brother used to do the char thing and rip the skin off. Eat that. A lot of those carcinogens in there. Yeah, but, like, I then I think he just ate the liquidy marshmallow.
He never went back for seconds. That's. That's crazy.
**Thomas** (00:19:56:18 - 00:20:10:19):
I bet it's like eating a cigarette. One marshmallow. Charred. Charred like that. That's no good. If you have marshmallow thoughts, let us know in the comments. Like and subscribe for more marshmallow related content.
**Chip** (00:20:10:22 - 00:20:15:09):
And we will. We'll be putting our next episode in Marshmallow Corner.
**Thomas** (00:20:15:14 - 00:20:22:13):
Yes. All right. The rest of the world has been using better sunscreen than us for decades. And nobody told us. Chip.
**Chip** (00:20:22:17 - 00:20:23:22):
No, it.
**Thomas** (00:20:23:22 - 00:20:43:06):
Cept one person was brave enough to tell me. I've been tipped off to this for a while because of the looks. Maxine. Guy. Oh, that. I saw a clip. It popped up on YouTube shorts, I believe. Just scroll and scroll and scrolling. This guy pops up and he's talking about the rest of the world. Like, is aging better than us?
Largely because of sunscreens.
**Chip** (00:20:45:02 - 00:20:48:00):
I'm sure it's a variety of reasons, but yeah, that's a that's a big one.
**Thomas** (00:20:48:01 - 00:20:53:00):
Yeah. So there's this I don't know if it's a chemical or a compound or whatever, but it's called.
**Chip** (00:20:53:00 - 00:20:54:15):
I like to think of it as a potion.
**Thomas** (00:20:54:15 - 00:21:21:22):
But motto on all, it's like too many vowels for me to read. It's what it does is it blocks these, uva rays. Most of what our it's most of what our sunscreens do is block UV, b rays, ultraviolet Blu rays, I believe. And the arrays are what really get deeper. They cause a lot of the aging and they open you up to a lot more cancers.
Supposedly this is like the spectrum of of UV rays we're blocking is not what the rest of the world has been doing. And it's just like gives you less wrinkles, less skin damage, less cancer, all these good things. There's absolutely no reason that the FDA has not approved it. The last time they improved an ingredient for sunscreen was over 20 years ago.
The rest of the world has had this stuff for I think I read in one place. It was like 27 years they've been using this stuff without problem, no history of issues, and they've just had better sunscreen. But that all ended last week, Bud. The FDA approved this compound. It can only be used from like one company right now.
They're the ones that did the work to get it approved. They have an.
**Chip** (00:22:09:16 - 00:22:10:12):
Eight patent.
**Thomas** (00:22:10:12 - 00:22:23:15):
An 18 month exclusivity window where they're the only ones that can provide this element for sunscreen users. But it's going to start showing up on shelves soon and we gotta use it.
**Chip** (00:22:23:18 - 00:22:24:17):
Yep. Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:22:24:18 - 00:22:25:10):
We gotta.
**Chip** (00:22:25:11 - 00:22:27:06):
Use it. We keep these boyish looks.
**Thomas** (00:22:27:07 - 00:22:31:19):
Yeah. We got we look like Swedish teens who have never seen the sun.
**Chip** (00:22:31:20 - 00:22:36:21):
I know if you're just listening to this podcast, we definitely look like a Swiss Mist commercial.
**Thomas** (00:22:36:23 - 00:22:42:04):
Yeah, we are hunks. We're painted in these jeans.
**Chip** (00:22:42:08 - 00:22:43:14):
We really are.
**Thomas** (00:22:43:16 - 00:22:51:20):
Here's my big question. We're, as a culture, the United States obsessed with being young and hot.
**Chip** (00:22:51:21 - 00:22:59:03):
Yeah. How has this not been put into the literally the hot sauce been put into the bottle?
**Thomas** (00:22:59:04 - 00:23:02:08):
It has to go back to some kind of lobby. And don't you think, like.
**Chip** (00:23:02:09 - 00:23:03:09):
I would assume so, yeah.
**Thomas** (00:23:03:09 - 00:23:09:02):
Big sunburn. We've talked about it before. Yeah. They want to keep us burnt baby.
**Chip** (00:23:09:03 - 00:23:12:17):
They want to keep us red. They want to keep us crackly.
**Thomas** (00:23:12:21 - 00:23:19:05):
Yeah. As the sunburnt podcast. This is a very very appropriate story I think for us to be governed.
**Chip** (00:23:19:05 - 00:23:37:10):
100%. Yeah. I think maybe that's the name of our branded sunblock is just called hot sauce because it's sauce and it keeps you hot. You know what I mean? He's hot and young looking at that. Write that down. Put that in our put that in our dream journal. Write that down.
**Thomas** (00:23:37:11 - 00:23:50:00):
Hot sauce. It's going in the dream journal. But yeah. Thanks so much FDA for pulling this one through. It's been a long time. It's been a long time coming. And we're all going to be 22 next year.
00:23:50:01 ā 00:23:51:03 UNRESOLVED ā Visually we're.
**Chip** (00:23:51:04 - 00:23:52:03):
Benjamin buttoning.
**Thomas** (00:23:52:03 - 00:23:57:23):
We're Benjamin buttoning. Oh, is 2027 the year of Benjamin buttoning for us?
**Chip** (00:23:58:01 - 00:23:58:16):
Absolutely.
**Thomas** (00:23:58:17 - 00:24:16:17):
I mean, this year we're getting super shredded. We're getting ready for these trips. We're working towards, looking like absolute just physical specimens for the age we are 20, 27. It's going to be about looking amazing for the age we used to be.
**Chip** (00:24:16:19 - 00:24:19:21):
It's like we're maxing our looks.
**Thomas** (00:24:19:22 - 00:24:22:22):
Yes, I think there's room on the internet for that.
**Chip** (00:24:22:23 - 00:24:23:15):
I think there is.
**Thomas** (00:24:23:16 - 00:24:24:02):
We got.
**Chip** (00:24:24:02 - 00:24:26:10):
To start write that down. Write that down in the Dream Journal two.
**Thomas** (00:24:26:15 - 00:24:39:16):
All right. I can't wait to dream about hot sauce and looks maxing. All right. Posting your Bali rice field selfie could literally ban you from Bali forever. That's the that's the new story.
**Chip** (00:24:39:16 - 00:24:45:02):
Chip banned from Bali Forever is at first of all my favorite Coldplay album.
**Thomas** (00:24:45:03 - 00:24:45:15):
Yeah.
**Chip** (00:24:45:15 - 00:24:55:18):
But this this story I love this. I love the people of Bali and Indonesia as a whole for doing this. So yeah, let's let's hear it. Let's, let's lay this out.
**Thomas** (00:24:55:19 - 00:25:28:18):
There really clamping down on it. And like the, the reasons for it are kind of, you know, speculative at least on, on our end, we don't have that information. But the Matador network is reporting that Bali has launched a government immigration task force, specifically targeting foreign influencers and content creators doing commercial work on tourist visas. So it's a visa loophole that they are trying to exploit because all these people are going there as Taurus, but they're actually doing their jobs, which is like some of them is just taking pictures on beaches.
But the list of jobs they're cracking down on goes even further. Okay, the penalties for violating range from fines and deportation all the way up to lifetime bands from the island. Chip. They are banning people for life for taking pictures without a permit. Basically.
**Chip** (00:25:53:22 - 00:25:59:19):
I love this. Here's what I say. I think they need to lean into those first few penalties. Fine, the fines.
**Thomas** (00:25:59:19 - 00:26:00:17):
The deportations.
**Chip** (00:26:00:18 - 00:26:14:21):
Do you see the problem with banning somebody for life from Bali? Know how many times in your life? Yeah. Are you really getting to Bali? I mean, hey, yeah, more power to you if you can. I feel like that would be like a lifetime trip.
**Thomas** (00:26:15:01 - 00:26:15:16):
Yeah.
**Chip** (00:26:15:18 - 00:26:27:06):
It'd be like me getting a lifetime ban from the Grand Canyon. Do you know what I'm saying? Yeah. Saw the Grand Canyon. All right. I'm sorry. I will not come back to this giant hole in the ground.
**Thomas** (00:26:27:07 - 00:26:35:00):
You're probably not going back. The task force is called the Dharma Diwata Task force.
**Chip** (00:26:35:01 - 00:26:35:16):
Okay?
**Thomas** (00:26:35:20 - 00:27:02:10):
Which loosely translates, allegedly to the righteousness of Bali. Love it. And it has 100 officers. So they're, like, really taking this seriously. They're obviously naming it is something that's protecting their culture, their land, their place. Between January 1st and April 12th of this year, they've already deported 165 foreign nationals in detained 62 more.
00:27:02:13 ā 00:27:03:02 UNRESOLVED ā Wow.
**Chip** (00:27:03:02 - 00:27:04:20):
So they're not kidding around.
**Thomas** (00:27:04:21 - 00:27:11:04):
They're not kidding around. And do you know how they find these people? Do you think there's a tip hotline or something that people call in to report?
**Chip** (00:27:11:05 - 00:27:15:16):
Is there like a some sort of like drone that follows selfie sticks around?
**Thomas** (00:27:15:18 - 00:27:32:08):
That might be true, but no, they're just sitting there scrolling, bro. They're catching you. They're catching you for what you're post. They're getting in your stories. They're getting in your feed. And like they're just like, oh, this this clearly looks fraudulent. This isn't working out.
**Chip** (00:27:32:09 - 00:27:37:20):
I think that if they had any sense of humor, they would comment on those things.
From the official.
Dharma thing.
**Thomas** (00:27:40:12 - 00:27:41:06):
That's funny.
**Chip** (00:27:41:08 - 00:27:43:10):
That just says hashtag deported. That's what.
**Thomas** (00:27:43:10 - 00:28:10:12):
I that's pretty funny. I think it's like fish in a barrel, because almost none of these people have the proper paperwork. Right? It's all about visas. So like tourist visas. Easy. You just get them. But a work visa requires a fee. They're losing out on that money. And also you need to have a sponsor. You need to have somebody from Bali that's like, these guys would be good for Bali in general if they could come do business here.
And I don't think that's how most of the locals feel about influencers who are just snapping some pics.
**Chip** (00:28:16:08 - 00:28:16:23):
You would assume.
**Thomas** (00:28:16:23 - 00:28:41:01):
So violations are also being enforced for things like doing professional makeup without a work license. Okay, unlicensed yoga instruction if you're going to Bali and taking videos of you like running your friends or running some other tourists through yoga stuff, and you're not certified, you're not licensed, you're gone.
**Chip** (00:28:41:01 - 00:28:51:04):
I do like that. I feel like unlicensed yoga could be a good selling point. Like it's like, you know how there's, like, hot yoga? There's goat yoga.
**Thomas** (00:28:51:08 - 00:28:52:00):
Yeah.
**Chip** (00:28:52:03 - 00:29:13:13):
Puppy kitten yoga, unlicensed yoga. So, like, you're just I we can do the stateside just picture. Okay. Picture. Like outside of, like, maybe like, south of Culver City somewhere. Thomas, whatever. There's just some sort of, like, warehouse. Just a rundown warehouse that's not being used anymore. Just rusted out. And it's like, pull back the door and get in.
And it's just like somebody like, get in, get your mats out, and you're just on the ground and you're just doing it quickly, like at night. And they're like.
00:29:20:10 ā 00:29:20:17 UNRESOLVED ā All right.
Get the hell out of here. The fuzz is coming, and then you run out. I feel like. You're your heart rate would go up more and you get a better workout.
Yeah. Oh, sure.
Sure. Okay.
00:29:31:00 ā 00:29:31:11 UNRESOLVED ā Third.
Time dream journal. Write it down. Thomas. We are going to start an unlicensed yoga studio. And literally, that's what we call it. Unlicensed yoga studio in in Los Angeles.
**Thomas** (00:29:42:09 - 00:29:58:01):
I have another pitch for the name. Okay. It's borrowing from a 90s trend. Do you remember the too hot for TV type of video series? Of course. All it really said is this is not appropriate. That's what it was saying, but it rebranded. It is too hot for.
**Chip** (00:29:58:01 - 00:29:59:12):
Too hot for hot yoga.
**Thomas** (00:29:59:13 - 00:30:24:14):
So I think too hot for Bali yoga. You know, we it's true you're not allowed to do it in Bali, but we're bringing it here to South Culver City. I think there's something there, buddy. That could be an exciting business venture. If you want to, invest in Too hot for Bali Yoga. Call the Trouble in Paradise hotline.
Leave a voice. We'll get back to you.
**Chip** (00:30:26:15 - 00:30:27:07):
Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:30:27:11 - 00:30:41:22):
Next story. Oh, I'm so excited. I wanted to talk about this because there's monkeys involved. Yeah, they're a couple's Costa Rican wedding got crashed by howler monkeys. The couple preferred it to the American equivalent. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson showing up. You know what I mean?
**Chip** (00:30:41:23 - 00:30:43:17):
I mean, 6 to 1, half dozen to.
**Thomas** (00:30:43:17 - 00:31:03:18):
The other. That's the same number, buddy. So Conde Nast Traveler is reporting that a couple's December destination wedding in Costa Rica was billed as an elegant affair that ends in a full rave, as most elegant affairs do. Chimp, obviously. What do you think an elegant rave is?
**Chip** (00:31:03:18 - 00:31:10:21):
I think it's a rave where people are wearing stylish clothes, like, more stylish than, you know, activewear or what have you.
**Thomas** (00:31:10:22 - 00:31:18:08):
Yeah, not the not the party club rags. Right. We're going a little more Gatsby than trash.
**Chip** (00:31:18:10 - 00:31:21:22):
Yeah, I feel like it's a little more studio 54.
**Thomas** (00:31:22:00 - 00:31:22:07):
Yeah.
**Chip** (00:31:22:07 - 00:31:27:07):
Yeah, 1978. Studio 54 is what what we're looking at with howler monkeys.
**Thomas** (00:31:27:08 - 00:31:42:10):
I mean, this one has howler monkeys. The celebration hosted 160 guests at this destination Costa Rican wedding. They are not like I think they had some family from Costa Rica that lived close to the hotel they were having this shindig at.
**Chip** (00:31:42:11 - 00:31:43:22):
Close to Rica is what you're saying.
**Thomas** (00:31:44:01 - 00:31:53:08):
The Costa Rica and Costa Rica? Yeah. Loco and Acapulco, Costa Rica and Costa Rica. Yeah. Dude, you were the officiant at my wedding.
**Chip** (00:31:53:09 - 00:31:53:21):
Yes, I.
**Thomas** (00:31:53:21 - 00:32:05:15):
Was, they they destination 160 people to Costa Rica. That's. How many people do you think were were in attendance at my wedding? If you had to cast a mate.
**Chip** (00:32:05:17 - 00:32:07:02):
Was like 60 or 70.
**Thomas** (00:32:07:03 - 00:32:08:15):
It was under 40 chip.
**Chip** (00:32:08:16 - 00:32:09:07):
No.
**Thomas** (00:32:09:09 - 00:32:13:05):
It was, it was. It was a Covid wedding, remember? You didn't even take a plane.
**Chip** (00:32:13:07 - 00:32:16:17):
You drove the Covid. Yeah, that is true. We were out on the lawn.
**Thomas** (00:32:16:18 - 00:32:17:05):
You drove.
**Chip** (00:32:17:06 - 00:32:19:13):
We had this Harley. Yeah, that we had.
**Thomas** (00:32:19:14 - 00:32:23:15):
We had a very, very, very pared down guest list.
**Chip** (00:32:23:16 - 00:32:25:03):
That's right, that's right. Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:32:25:04 - 00:32:28:15):
But 40 people, it felt like 60, 70.
**Chip** (00:32:28:16 - 00:32:49:05):
I mean, it was it was a rip roaring good time. I mean, no, I mean, no offense. No offense to you and your lovely wife and your families. And I hate to say this, I one of the worst weddings I've ever been to because there was no howler monkeys there. Thomas. Every other wedding I've ever been to, just loaded with howler.
Howler monkeys everywhere. Yeah, and I think it's the one thing that you guys missed. The, the the food was amazing. The decor was beautiful. The the the the the location. The people were amazing. Yeah. You did not have a single howler monkey at your wedding, Thomas. And I think it was a big miss. I. I've been holding off on saying that for years, but, I think now's the time to come out.
I think I think live and learn, I think, is what you're saying, Thomas.
**Thomas** (00:33:13:19 - 00:33:17:18):
You know what's close? The San Diego Zoo, where they have plenty of monkeys.
**Chip** (00:33:17:19 - 00:33:20:10):
They got howler monkeys. And we weren't too far from the San Diego Zoo.
**Thomas** (00:33:20:11 - 00:33:28:13):
Dude, I went there. I went there two weeks ago. Not too far at all. It's just right downtown and really, really well. One of the best zoos on the planet. I think.
**Chip** (00:33:28:14 - 00:33:30:12):
That's what they say. It's the big. It's the big show.
**Thomas** (00:33:30:13 - 00:33:34:03):
Yeah, it's it's the big show in zoos. Really, really enjoyed it.
**Chip** (00:33:34:03 - 00:33:49:07):
I always wonder if animals, like, know they're at the San Diego Zoo. Like, they feel a little special. Do you know what I mean? They're like, oh, it's like my buddy caught. He got drafted to Cleveland, but I got San Diego, man. I'm in the big. I'm in the big show.
**Thomas** (00:33:49:08 - 00:34:06:04):
It's got to be better. It's got to be better. Like the the environment is just cooler. They've got a lot of, you know, they've got a lot of shade to where I think some other zoos might not. The weather's obviously phenomenal. I think about that with the Honolulu Zoo as well.
**Chip** (00:34:06:05 - 00:34:11:01):
Now we did not go to the Honolulu Zoo. But is was the zoo like right across from the park where we did the five K.
**Thomas** (00:34:11:02 - 00:34:17:07):
Where we did the five K, the you know, there was the start stretch and then we turn and head away from the water.
**Chip** (00:34:17:08 - 00:34:18:13):
Made that right. And then that.
**Thomas** (00:34:18:13 - 00:34:21:11):
Whole left, that whole stretch is the zoo.
**Chip** (00:34:21:13 - 00:34:30:22):
Because I remember looking for animals, and I know my wife had walked up there the one day to she was going to a store for some reason, whenever she walked and she saw, she saw a giraffe head.
**Thomas** (00:34:30:23 - 00:34:42:00):
You got to stop saying that, Chip. There's no such thing as a divorce store. Yes, your wife went to inquire about getting separated. Yes. She didn't just go to the store.
**Chip** (00:34:42:02 - 00:34:54:13):
And I should say, when she saw the giraffe head, it was attached to the drafts body. It was above the fence. It wasn't just like, yeah. Oh my God, there's a giraffe head on the sidewalk. Like, nothing like that. I don't want to. It's. I don't want to set up any alarms.
**Thomas** (00:34:54:13 - 00:34:58:05):
It's cool. It's right along that path. Same path. We walk to Mores Cafe.
**Chip** (00:34:58:08 - 00:35:00:11):
Yep. One of the best breakfasts I've ever had.
**Thomas** (00:35:00:11 - 00:35:05:14):
Oh, dude. So good. And then we just kept on walking right to that little farmer's market. Dude, what a day.
**Chip** (00:35:05:15 - 00:35:08:22):
I had some bevy. It was. It was some sort of like ginger.
**Thomas** (00:35:09:00 - 00:35:18:22):
I mean, I think you guys got. We went to a local juice crafter. Yeah, I think I got some kind of POG situation. You and my wife both got a ginger or something or other.
**Chip** (00:35:19:00 - 00:35:20:11):
Yeah, it was delicious.
**Thomas** (00:35:20:12 - 00:35:25:21):
So? So good. What a what a freaking time to be alive. Just walking around Honolulu.
**Chip** (00:35:25:21 - 00:35:27:07):
Up on the hill in Honolulu.
**Thomas** (00:35:27:08 - 00:35:28:23):
Getting to celebrate it all.
**Chip** (00:35:29:00 - 00:35:30:20):
Going loco down in.
**Thomas** (00:35:30:20 - 00:35:33:16):
Honolulu, getting freaky up in Waikiki.
**Chip** (00:35:33:17 - 00:35:36:15):
Waikiki.
That's a good one. Keep that t shirt idea. Fourth idea. Dream journal. Right.
**Thomas** (00:35:40:23 - 00:35:58:20):
There's going to be a lot of those. I think maybe maybe they'll make the team. Maybe that will make the teas during the ceremony. Trip back to these monkeys. The howler monkeys were loudly vocal from the jungle during the vowel portion. Specifically, what do you think this means?
**Chip** (00:35:58:20 - 00:36:18:02):
I think it has to be a positive. You have to look at it as a positive. It's yes. As your favorite singer said, it's like rain on your wedding day and it's like 5000. However, monkeys just joining in the wedding, right? And I think that's that's got to be cool. I think that's a I think that's a good omen.
**Thomas** (00:36:18:03 - 00:36:23:12):
What if they're silent until you asked, does anybody object?
**Chip** (00:36:23:14 - 00:36:39:16):
And then the monkeys go crazy. That's when you want to look at your significant other and be like, all right, what's what's going on here? Yeah, that's maybe what I would decide. All right. I'm running. Yeah. Leaving the bride at the altar and just starting a new life on the beach in Costa Rica.
**Thomas** (00:36:39:18 - 00:36:52:12):
I mean, there's worse places. Apparently, the ground vibrates. Ship? Yeah, there's a lot of quartz there. One of the most healing places in the world. That's what we keep hearing. Yeah. Moving on from that one. That that one. I just wanted to talk about the monkeys.
**Chip** (00:36:52:12 - 00:37:02:01):
I would be so excited if they're just a bunch of howler monkeys going nuts during. Oh, you're. That's what you came to Costa Rica for? Yeah. Do you know what I'm saying?
**Thomas** (00:37:02:02 - 00:37:05:14):
Yeah, yeah. And then they went on to just do a rave.
**Chip** (00:37:05:15 - 00:37:06:22):
Monkey rave I love it.
**Thomas** (00:37:06:23 - 00:37:13:06):
A real almost White Lotus fevered pitch being reached their potentially.
**Chip** (00:37:13:07 - 00:37:14:16):
Yeah I love it.
**Thomas** (00:37:14:16 - 00:37:30:13):
All right. And we don't know any of those people. So if, if this is you, if you're watching, if you're a burnt one, this happens to be about your wedding and we're mischaracterizing anything. Call us the hotline. Let us know what's going on. We'd love to talk to you anyways, but also, we're sorry if we got anything wrong.
We're just. We're just talking about what we read.
**Chip** (00:37:33:05 - 00:37:34:21):
We're just reporting what we know.
**Thomas** (00:37:34:22 - 00:38:00:01):
Or what we think we know. Yeah. All right, buddy, on to something we really know. This is based off of facts. This is based off a stats, statistical analysis, all the stuff that has been going on in the world with uncertainty and fuel prices has cut airline profits in half. Chip. Yeah. Buckle up. We're experiencing some airline turbulence.
So dude, air traffic or like air airline business the travel like always razor thin margins like they are operating on the razor's edge. And they've been hit with two things right now. It's like these a bunch of routes have been shut down and fuel prices have gone through the roof. Yeah. So it is a disaster that is causing the global airline industry.
Is profitability to roughly be cut in half compared to this year's already challenging forecasts?
**Chip** (00:38:37:02 - 00:39:01:12):
Again, just yet another reason why we should not be building this helicopter from scratch to start our own helicopter transit service. I'm just saying, I've been I've been against it since the beginning, but you just keep wanting. You got that helicopter kit, you build it. We're going to fly people around. I just saying, I don't think there's money to be made.
**Thomas** (00:39:01:14 - 00:39:10:05):
Sunburnt helicopter tours. If you'd like to preorder one to prove Chip wrong, call the Trouble in Paradise hotline.
**Chip** (00:39:10:11 - 00:39:24:18):
The the helicopter is not totally built yet. Neither of us are engineers nor electricians or anything of that nature. But we use a lot of heart and we use a lot of elbow grease.
**Thomas** (00:39:24:21 - 00:39:29:21):
And the kit came with pictures. It did. The kit came with pictures.
**Chip** (00:39:30:02 - 00:39:38:17):
Okay. The directions in in their defense, the directions are in Russian. Yeah, but I think.
**Thomas** (00:39:38:18 - 00:39:39:12):
But the pictures.
**Chip** (00:39:39:13 - 00:39:41:02):
We're learning a new language to.
**Thomas** (00:39:41:03 - 00:39:42:15):
The pictures are the pictures.
**Chip** (00:39:42:16 - 00:39:43:09):
Yep.
**Thomas** (00:39:43:10 - 00:40:01:04):
And it's going to be safe. It's going to be cool. We'll try it out before we bring on paying customers. But like I think I think we need to get your attitude elevated about the flying height of this helicopter when it's going to be in operational form.
**Chip** (00:40:01:07 - 00:40:05:06):
Yeah. Get that attitude adjusted with that altitude.
**Thomas** (00:40:05:06 - 00:40:22:12):
So airline profits were already razor thin before this hit. And having what little cushion existed before just eradicated sent shockwaves through ticket prices, route decisions and capacity on the planes.
**Chip** (00:40:22:13 - 00:40:23:00):
Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:40:23:01 - 00:40:45:14):
Fuel and geopolitics are hitting simultaneously in the airline industry's nightmare combo. You can hedge for one, you cannot hedge for both at the same time. And the industry is like just bleeding out a little bit. Yeah. And the craziest part about like, this challenging time for the airline industry is that people are still traveling. Chip, can you imagine.
**Chip** (00:40:45:15 - 00:40:50:08):
Like still putting up the cash to get out there to go to the US or wherever?
**Thomas** (00:40:50:09 - 00:41:14:03):
Apparently challenges have risen so much faster than even the prices, like ticket prices are up like things are more expensive. Travel demand has not diminished. People are still paying what they're being asked for, and it's still not enough to cover the gap. No. So what that means is people are going to keep feeling creeping. Airfare increases. There's probably going to be reduced route availability.
And, you know, for the poor airline workers, though, demand has largely stayed the same. They're experiencing hiring freezes. And, you know, lack of lack of promotions, lack of raises, all that kind of stuff. They have all the same amount of work to do, and the industry is just making less money, so there's less to go around. It's like a nightmare scenario.
Chip.
**Chip** (00:41:36:18 - 00:41:46:02):
The last thing you want is in overreached, flight attendant, you know, just overworked flight. And who's just. They can't push that cart by themselves all the time.
**Thomas** (00:41:46:02 - 00:41:54:03):
The good news is, I guess the silver lining is in success. We will be hiring one flight attendant. Yes. For our helicopter or business.
**Chip** (00:41:54:04 - 00:42:13:11):
He, she, he or she will get up and move about the very small cockpit and give us drinks. Peanuts, all of that. Hot towels. Yeah. Thomas, let me ask you a question. I think I know the answer. Have you ever had a hot towel on a helicopter? No, no you haven't. No, you have not. It's heaven.
**Thomas** (00:42:13:11 - 00:42:15:05):
That's what we're selling. Heaven?
**Chip** (00:42:15:07 - 00:42:15:11):
Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:42:15:11 - 00:42:27:06):
We are getting up in those friendly skies. And actually, probably we shouldn't mention heaven and our helicopter business in the same sense. That is challenging for a lot of different reasons.
**Chip** (00:42:27:06 - 00:42:35:09):
It is. We have. Yeah, our the creative end of our marketing has, let's just say, been stalled for a little bit.
**Thomas** (00:42:35:10 - 00:42:39:12):
And we also shouldn't say stalled when talking about our helicopter.
**Chip** (00:42:39:13 - 00:42:42:16):
The marketing ideas have dropped off sharply.
**Thomas** (00:42:42:16 - 00:42:44:12):
They've crashed and burned. Jeff.
**Chip** (00:42:44:13 - 00:42:46:00):
Yes.
**Thomas** (00:42:46:02 - 00:42:47:21):
That's it for for the algo. Do we.
**Chip** (00:42:47:22 - 00:42:49:00):
Did it for the algo.
**Thomas** (00:42:49:01 - 00:42:53:01):
What a nice little hit of tropical news.
**Chip** (00:42:53:02 - 00:42:55:02):
Lot, lot of tropical news.
**Thomas** (00:42:55:04 - 00:43:00:12):
Now it's time to stop into the hypochondriac corner.
**Chip** (00:43:00:14 - 00:43:01:17):
How are we feeling, Thomas?
**Thomas** (00:43:01:18 - 00:43:06:01):
It's weird. I'm feeling fine. I'm also feeling very bizarre. I have a respiratory issue.
**Chip** (00:43:06:02 - 00:43:06:23):
Chip. Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:43:07:05 - 00:43:16:19):
Sorry for the listeners last week. If you could hear my, I don't know, I don't feel sick. There's nothing else going on. I'm just, like, gunk in my lungs.
**Chip** (00:43:16:19 - 00:43:24:23):
I think that's what it's the. It's the time of year, man. There's. The pollen is out there. Those trees are making love. They are. And we we pay the price.
**Thomas** (00:43:24:23 - 00:43:45:11):
My worst hypochondriac thoughts when, like, I was having a little bit of trouble breathing because all the gunk in there was just like, am I gonna wake up, right? Am I going to fall asleep feeling good? Maybe the lack of oxygen even made it easier to fall asleep. And it's just like it's. And then, of course, I'm up with my mind racing, and it's all I can focus on.
**Chip** (00:43:45:11 - 00:44:03:08):
I will say, yeah, try to focus on something else. I remember when I had my collapsed lung a number of years during the pandemic. We were right before the pandemic was awful. I really started focusing on my breathing. Wrong idea, wrong idea. Because then you're like, I'm breathing weird because you know why? For 40 years, Thomas, you've never thought about your breathing.
And then you're like, oh yeah, it just works. And then all of a sudden you start thinking about it like, wait, is this how it's always done? I don't think so. And then your mind goes crazy, but you're like, no. Yeah, you're you're breathing just fine.
**Thomas** (00:44:12:03 - 00:44:20:17):
I'm just so glad you can't really do that with your heartbeat. Can you imagine, like, beat your heart a little faster, a little slower. And then one day you just realize, like.
**Chip** (00:44:20:18 - 00:44:23:06):
Put it up into third gear now.
**Thomas** (00:44:23:08 - 00:44:24:03):
Oh, mama.
**Chip** (00:44:24:04 - 00:44:24:19):
No, thanks.
**Thomas** (00:44:24:20 - 00:44:46:13):
All right, man. Well, that's it for the hypochondriac corner. And you know what that means. We're moving on to our favorite dude. It's our hero. We've been studying the man, Mr. Jimmy Buffett. It's time for Buffett facts. We're big Buffett heads. We've been doing the research to uncover facts about our hero that you might not know. That's right.
Chip, hit me with your Buffett fact for this week, buddy.
**Chip** (00:44:49:13 - 00:44:59:12):
Jimmy Buffett only had one setting on his washing machine, and that was cool for bright colors.
**Thomas** (00:44:59:14 - 00:45:02:20):
Dude, you know that's all you need for a Hawaiian buddy.
**Chip** (00:45:02:22 - 00:45:06:05):
Yeah, and it's cool. Just like Jimmy Buffett.
**Thomas** (00:45:06:06 - 00:45:08:15):
That makes so much sense. Like, I never thought about it.
**Chip** (00:45:08:16 - 00:45:16:05):
He didn't have any darks. He didn't need darks. You know what I mean? Like, he's just it's all it's all bright colors. So he just had that one setting.
**Thomas** (00:45:16:05 - 00:45:19:20):
And it's all chilled out. Dude, I love that, man I love that.
**Chip** (00:45:19:23 - 00:45:21:07):
Yeah. How about you, Thomas?
**Thomas** (00:45:21:08 - 00:45:32:18):
Jimmy Buffett knew the perfect Father's Day gift. Get dad to a place where his drinks have salt on the rim, and he has salt water on his skin.
**Chip** (00:45:32:20 - 00:45:38:10):
Love it. Thomas, you're going to be writing for hallmark someday soon. Jimmy Buffett collection of hallmark.
**Thomas** (00:45:38:11 - 00:45:45:20):
Well, was that Adam Sandler movie where he wrote cards? Was that Mr. Deeds?
**Chip** (00:45:45:22 - 00:45:49:11):
I don't, I don't I'm not aware of that one.
**Thomas** (00:45:49:13 - 00:45:50:05):
All right.
**Chip** (00:45:50:06 - 00:45:52:06):
What was that one where he sang at weddings?
**Thomas** (00:45:52:06 - 00:45:53:11):
The wedding singer.
**Chip** (00:45:53:14 - 00:45:54:13):
That's right, that's right.
**Thomas** (00:45:54:14 - 00:45:59:09):
What was the one where he was a large father figure?
**Chip** (00:45:59:11 - 00:46:03:13):
What was the one where he wasn't big? Nicky.
**Thomas** (00:46:03:15 - 00:46:17:22):
All right. Buffett. Facts are over. That means. Oh, hallmark. Hallmark. Call your boy if you want a sunburnt line of cards. Chip and I are here, dude. And we've got just gold. We spit out gold, we throw gold in the toilet.
**Chip** (00:46:17:22 - 00:46:24:05):
We know hallmark, you have that sassy old lady who I love is always, like, angry about stuff and drinking coffee or whatever she does.
**Thomas** (00:46:24:06 - 00:46:30:20):
Yeah, if you want, that old lady to be upset about all the Gen Zers in the Bahamas.
**Chip** (00:46:30:21 - 00:46:32:18):
Go to the US.
**Thomas** (00:46:32:20 - 00:46:36:16):
Come on, give us a call. We can. We can talk about that frustration and a concise.
**Chip** (00:46:36:17 - 00:46:36:22):
Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:46:36:22 - 00:47:01:03):
We can in a pleasing way. It's so specific. Tropical travel comedy. We could put them together in your cards. Come on. Hallmark. Yeah. Come on. Hallmark. All right, that's it. That's it for Buffett facts. That's off Jimmy Buffett. Well done. But that means we're feeling some splashing. We're feeling some splashing. It's coming. It's coming like a steaming locomotive or a better yet, a cruise ship.
It's time for sunbird podcast fish.
00:47:03:13 ā 00:47:04:21 UNRESOLVED ā Of the week.
**Chip** (00:47:04:23 - 00:47:10:18):
And for our fish of the week. Thomas, we have little literal royalty.
**Thomas** (00:47:10:19 - 00:47:11:22):
Oh my gosh.
**Chip** (00:47:11:22 - 00:47:20:08):
We have literal royalty. This week's fish of the week is Hector the Reef triggerfish.
**Thomas** (00:47:20:09 - 00:47:31:05):
Okay, okay, I'm very excited. I think I know exactly what fish you're talking about, but give me a little more context before I just get all excited and squirt everywhere.
**Chip** (00:47:31:06 - 00:47:40:11):
All right. Well, well. Hector the reef triggerfish is also known as who? Moomoo nuku nuku pua.
**Thomas** (00:47:40:12 - 00:47:41:02):
Oh, yeah.
**Chip** (00:47:41:05 - 00:47:44:11):
I believe I said that correctly I hope I did, I hope I did it justice.
**Thomas** (00:47:44:12 - 00:47:45:03):
Yeah, yeah.
**Chip** (00:47:45:04 - 00:47:49:02):
He is the state fish of Hawaii.
**Thomas** (00:47:49:05 - 00:48:09:23):
He is the bass dude. I've seen these at the Fairmont Orchid. They've got a little a little spot, a lagoon that could go out there in the Big Island, I believe I've seen them in. And Kauai too. And when you see one of these bad boys I've seen in Maui as well, when you see one of these bad boys, you know, it's the state fish.
They're so distinct looking and it just fires you up.
00:48:13:20 ā 00:48:14:11 UNRESOLVED ā Hector.
Welcome to the program, buddy. Looking great dude.
**Chip** (00:48:17:13 - 00:48:40:01):
Hector looking good. Just amazing colors, you know? I mean, he's just I he's got so much to offer. So humor. Nuku Nuku Apu translates to triggerfish with the snout of a pig, which I believe Thomas was your nickname in middle school?
**Thomas** (00:48:40:02 - 00:48:48:19):
Yeah, it was more painful then, but that. That's true. It's beautiful on Hector for a self-conscious 12 year old. Yeah. Not great in the shower.
**Chip** (00:48:48:20 - 00:49:02:12):
Now, not only does Hector have the snout of a pig, but he makes audible underwater, audible pig like grunts when he's threatened again, much like you in middle school.
**Thomas** (00:49:02:17 - 00:49:17:01):
Yes, much like me in middle school. There's also a YouTuber. I think his name's like Hawaiian hammers or something along those lines. Some variation of that. And he's a spear fisher that goes down okay. So often you just hear him go.
00:49:17:02 ā 00:49:18:09 UNRESOLVED ā Oh, oh, oh.
Oh when he's down there, he makes that sound to like, I guess a disguise himself, audibly make him think there's, you know, more fish down there, maybe more triggerfish.
**Chip** (00:49:27:03 - 00:49:29:19):
I know, I love it. Yeah, dude.
00:49:29:19 ā 00:49:30:15 UNRESOLVED ā That's sick.
One thing he can also do to sort of watch for predators or maybe prey, or maybe just he's doing some sightseeing. Hector can move his eyes independently of each other, giving him nearly a 360 degree field of view so he can basically see all the way around him, which is why a lot of the lady triggerfish are always like, hey, Hector, my gills are up here.
**Thomas** (00:49:57:07 - 00:49:58:09):
Yeah, yeah.
You got caught, Hector. You got caught.
**Chip** (00:50:01:07 - 00:50:17:00):
Got caught looking. Now, Hector is the reef triggerfish. Of course he he is called the triggerfish because of these two bony spines. One that sticks out the top of his body, one that sticks out the bottom. They look like triggers on a gun.
**Thomas** (00:50:17:00 - 00:50:17:17):
Oh, wow.
**Chip** (00:50:17:17 - 00:50:39:09):
And basically their kick stance. Just like in your bike in middle school, Thomas, what they do is if they're hiding or maybe they're sleeping for the night, they're hiding from a predator, they will go into a reef. And these little bony spines, these little triggers stick out. So it kind of catches on the reef. So it sort of lets them hold on to the rock so they don't just sort of drift on out.
So that is.
**Thomas** (00:50:40:03 - 00:50:41:02):
Their own neck.
**Chip** (00:50:41:03 - 00:51:01:13):
Kick start. Right. It's it's it's pretty crazy. Yeah. Yeah. And Hector of course, like I said, is very stylish as well. Vivid colors. Yeah. Yellow black and white, blue green patterns all over. But Thomas, you would dress it up too, if you were literally the state fish of Hawaii.
**Thomas** (00:51:01:14 - 00:51:03:09):
Absolutely. You got to represent.
**Chip** (00:51:03:09 - 00:51:22:22):
Yeah. I mean, this is not the state of Montana or South Dakota. This is Hawaii, the big show. Dress up like it's NBA draft day. Like show those colors, be fancy. And that's what you are. Hector. The Hawaii state fish, the reef triggerfish.
**Thomas** (00:51:23:00 - 00:51:40:07):
Hats off. Hector. You're beautiful. You're famous. You've got a high position in society. Everything's going your way and you deserve to be sunburnt. Podcast. Fish. Fish of the week. Our hero of the deep. Congratulations, Hector. What's the long version of the name? The hapa?
**Chip** (00:51:40:10 - 00:51:46:06):
If I'm saying it correctly, I apologize. If not, but who? Moomoo nuku nuku. Apu.
**Thomas** (00:51:46:08 - 00:51:58:00):
I've talked to you before about this. Like bar where the bar is a fish tank. The whole thing has a fish tank. That's the name of that bar.
**Chip** (00:51:58:01 - 00:51:58:20):
I love it, I.
**Thomas** (00:51:58:20 - 00:52:12:17):
Love it. It's at the Grand Wailea and Maui, I believe. And that's that's the name of the bar is like that long fish name. Yeah. Fishes of the week has come to pass. That means it is time to open up the good book.
**Chip** (00:52:12:18 - 00:52:15:07):
The Guinness Book of World Records.
00:52:15:08 ā 00:52:16:05 UNRESOLVED ā Oh, yeah.
**Thomas** (00:52:16:06 - 00:52:23:06):
Buddy, we've got some hot ones today. Chip. Yeah, we did some hot, hot world records we're talking about.
**Chip** (00:52:23:07 - 00:52:26:12):
Yeah. What have we got? Thomas? What's he. What is your world record of the week?
**Thomas** (00:52:26:12 - 00:52:33:04):
Well, I don't know if you know this or not, but it's actually a holiday this weekend. You actually didn't know about this holiday?
**Chip** (00:52:33:05 - 00:52:38:15):
Oh, this is the newly minted Father's Day, I believe. Is that right?
**Thomas** (00:52:38:16 - 00:52:58:14):
It's Father's Day this Sunday, and I thought I would look for a father related world record. And boy, did I find one, buddy. Yep, we haven't featured an individual this kind of masculine swagger since the dong maxing length. Lord himself. Longitude.
**Chip** (00:52:58:15 - 00:52:59:19):
Longitude. Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:52:59:20 - 00:53:04:21):
But where longitude went long, this legend went old.
**Chip** (00:53:04:23 - 00:53:05:21):
Oh, okay.
**Thomas** (00:53:05:22 - 00:53:14:06):
My Father's Day weekend world record from the Good Book is the oldest man to ever father a child.
**Chip** (00:53:14:10 - 00:53:16:18):
Oh. All right, let's get into it.
**Thomas** (00:53:16:19 - 00:53:25:13):
Let me set the scene. An Australian legend meets his Fijian third wife through a dating agency.
**Chip** (00:53:25:17 - 00:53:29:07):
Of course, as the tale. As old as time.
**Thomas** (00:53:29:08 - 00:53:53:05):
As old as time, and as almost as old as this man. I need you to guess how old the good Book actually had to go through and certify. Very rarely does the good book put legally. Yep, next to a record. But this one is the I believe it's the oldest man to have ever legally fathered a child.
**Chip** (00:53:53:06 - 00:53:59:16):
That's disturbing. I'm going to put him up in octogenarian age. I'm going to say 80 years old.
**Thomas** (00:53:59:18 - 00:54:16:12):
80 years old. That's a very good guess. That's a very good guess. But blue, chubby, damned. Yeah. Less. Collie of Australia was 92 years and ten months old when his son Oswald was born.
**Chip** (00:54:16:13 - 00:54:19:20):
Oh, dad. Oh, dad. Daddy!
**Thomas** (00:54:20:00 - 00:54:21:22):
Two.
**Chip** (00:54:22:00 - 00:54:22:17):
Man.
**Thomas** (00:54:22:18 - 00:54:28:01):
Can you imagine the the packet of seeds this guy was sprinkling?
**Chip** (00:54:28:05 - 00:54:36:00):
Like by the time the kids old enough to remember him. The dad best case scenario is 96 years old.
**Thomas** (00:54:36:01 - 00:54:39:23):
And like this kid did not get a young kids name.
**Chip** (00:54:40:00 - 00:54:41:00):
Oh, no.
**Thomas** (00:54:41:02 - 00:54:50:16):
Oswald. Oswald is not. I mean, he's Oswald was running around with a bunch of Zoe's. Yeah. And Hayden's.
**Chip** (00:54:50:17 - 00:54:52:16):
And Tristan's and Tyler's. Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:54:52:16 - 00:54:55:07):
Tristan's. Tyler's the whole deal.
**Chip** (00:54:55:11 - 00:54:56:10):
Oswald.
**Thomas** (00:54:56:12 - 00:55:00:20):
Les. Callie was an Australian man born in 1898.
**Chip** (00:55:00:22 - 00:55:01:16):
Oh, my God.
**Thomas** (00:55:01:17 - 00:55:06:14):
Who fathered his ninth child in July of 1992.
**Chip** (00:55:06:16 - 00:55:09:09):
Man, grunge was going crazy.
**Thomas** (00:55:09:10 - 00:55:19:01):
It was raging. Dude. You could you could get a pretty nice a pretty nice mellow weekend morning started with the VHS or a VH1 top 20.
**Chip** (00:55:19:02 - 00:55:30:03):
Yeah. You could. Wow. And then he's just by the way, we're we're applauding this man, this 92 year old man. I think we have to give some kudos to the wife.
**Thomas** (00:55:30:04 - 00:55:34:15):
In terms of birth. Let's give it up for the wives. The guys really aren't doing that much.
**Chip** (00:55:34:15 - 00:55:35:20):
Give it up for the ladies.
**Thomas** (00:55:35:20 - 00:55:50:05):
Come on. Yeah. Last met Oswald's mother through a physical matchmaking agency in 1991. Meaning, like, at 90 years old, this guy had to fill out a bunch of, like, paper forms correctly.
**Chip** (00:55:50:05 - 00:55:54:05):
In his defense, he just thought he was filling up paperwork for a colonoscopy.
**Thomas** (00:55:54:06 - 00:55:56:20):
That's true. And it went the other way.
**Chip** (00:55:56:22 - 00:55:58:01):
All of a sudden he got away.
**Thomas** (00:55:58:01 - 00:56:04:14):
He's just trying to get some health insurance things covered, and he ended up with a wonderful Fijian woman.
**Chip** (00:56:04:15 - 00:56:05:09):
There it is.
**Thomas** (00:56:05:10 - 00:56:16:19):
Unfortunately last did pass away in 1998. Yeah. The same year the recor record was officially certified. And it was just before his 100th birthday.
**Chip** (00:56:16:22 - 00:56:20:18):
Oh, okay. So at least he got a little treat. Knew he went into the Guinness Book.
**Thomas** (00:56:20:18 - 00:56:32:13):
Knew he. Yeah, he got into the good book. Maybe that's all he was holding on for at that point. And he got in, felt a sweet release. My work here is done, but here's where it gets juicy. Dude. People keep coming for less. His throne.
**Chip** (00:56:32:14 - 00:56:33:12):
Oh, man.
**Thomas** (00:56:33:13 - 00:57:04:07):
They keep coming at him. Ramjet Raghav reportedly had one at 96. James E Smith reported that he had won at 101, and Mohammed Al Adam at 92 and 11 months. All these people came to the good book. The good book went through and said, less is more. The others had insufficient documentation, every single one. So this goes out to less.
Kohli, the silver stallion of the South Pacific. You remain undefeated. And on this Father's Day, the Sunburnt podcast takes our hats off to you. Stay burnt wherever you are. Less stay burnt.
**Chip** (00:57:20:03 - 00:57:23:06):
Well done. Heading off into the sunset like that.
**Thomas** (00:57:23:06 - 00:57:28:00):
Oldest father to legally have a child.
**Chip** (00:57:28:06 - 00:57:28:23):
Yeah.
**Thomas** (00:57:29:02 - 00:57:30:21):
All right. Chip, what do you got, buddy?
**Chip** (00:57:30:22 - 00:57:33:03):
This guy last seemed pretty dynamic.
**Thomas** (00:57:33:05 - 00:57:33:18):
Yes.
**Chip** (00:57:33:21 - 00:57:42:11):
I have yet another amazing man to celebrate. He goes by the name of Dynamic Derek.
**Thomas** (00:57:42:11 - 00:57:44:19):
Dynamic Derek. Alliterative.
**Chip** (00:57:44:20 - 00:57:49:05):
He is the world's tallest living donkey.
**Thomas** (00:57:49:09 - 00:57:50:04):
What?
**Chip** (00:57:50:05 - 00:57:58:02):
The world's tallest living donkey? Because apparently, Thomas, there's a lot of dead donkeys out there that are really big.
**Thomas** (00:57:58:04 - 00:58:03:15):
Yeah. No. Okay. This is this is wild. So the current currently living the world's tallest donkey.
**Chip** (00:58:03:16 - 00:58:05:21):
He's the world's tallest living donkey.
**Thomas** (00:58:05:21 - 00:58:09:23):
And that is from hoof to head. Or how is that measured?
**Chip** (00:58:10:00 - 00:58:18:07):
They measure donkeys, I think horses to they measure it from what they call the hoof to the withers.
**Thomas** (00:58:18:08 - 00:58:19:08):
The withers.
**Chip** (00:58:19:08 - 00:58:27:18):
So from the bottom, from their hoof up to the withers, which is like the ridge of the back, like on the base of the neck.
**Thomas** (00:58:27:19 - 00:58:28:22):
That lovely lady.
**Chip** (00:58:28:22 - 00:58:42:04):
Lump, that lovely lady lump. That's right on the base of the neck, on the back. So, like, if the donkey is looking up, he can probably go up another foot, you know, if you think about it. But I guess his heads down a lot. So they go to the top of the ridge, which they call the withers.
**Thomas** (00:58:42:05 - 00:58:51:16):
It makes sense when a horse is standing. That is the not the highest non variable part of the horse, right? You can't tell a horse to stand up straight.
**Chip** (00:58:51:16 - 00:58:53:17):
Stand up straight. Horses don't know about good posture.
**Thomas** (00:58:53:18 - 00:58:57:19):
This makes sense. This makes sense. It's the highest portion naturally where the horse would stand. Okay.
**Chip** (00:58:57:20 - 00:59:06:12):
Do you want to take a guess how tall the world's tallest living donkey is? From hoof to withers.
**Thomas** (00:59:06:12 - 00:59:20:22):
From the window to the wall. Yep, from the hoof to the weather's while getting freaky. And Waikiki. I'm going to guess.
4.5ft tall.
**Chip** (00:59:23:12 - 00:59:29:03):
That's a great guess, Thomas. That's a great guess. It is a donkey. He's a little bigger, though. Okay, five foot five.
**Thomas** (00:59:29:04 - 00:59:29:11):
Five.
Foot five.
**Chip** (00:59:30:21 - 00:59:45:03):
Five, five. Derek, the world's tallest living donkey, measures in at five five, the same height as Bruno Mars. Jason Alexander, Daniel Radcliffe, spike Lee and Billy Joel.
**Thomas** (00:59:45:07 - 00:59:45:21):
Wow.
A lot of talent at that five five.
**Chip** (00:59:47:22 - 00:59:54:03):
Height and I never really I've been a Billy Joel fan my whole life. I never realized that Billy Joel is only five five.
**Thomas** (00:59:54:03 - 00:59:55:23):
I mean, yeah, surprising.
**Chip** (00:59:55:23 - 01:00:01:03):
We didn't start the fire. We couldn't even reach the matches. I'm saying.
**Thomas** (01:00:01:04 - 01:00:05:08):
That Piano Man was sitting on a phone book. Yes.
**Chip** (01:00:05:10 - 01:00:12:15):
Sing us a song, please. Yeah, just get up another inch or two. Can you reach the. Can you reach the pedals?
**Thomas** (01:00:12:16 - 01:00:17:13):
I mean, there's a lot of logistics he had to overcome, which makes his career even more incredible.
**Chip** (01:00:17:13 - 01:00:20:08):
It really does to reach all those keys, that wingspan.
**Thomas** (01:00:20:09 - 01:00:24:02):
I just wonder if you're measuring him from hoof to withers. Where? Billy Joel.
**Chip** (01:00:24:04 - 01:00:35:15):
Oh, no. Billy Joel's withers. Yeah. That's true. He's probably a little bit taller than if you think about it. Because if we're just going up to Billy Joel's Withers, he still has a, you know, New York state of mind up there a little bit. Yeah.
**Thomas** (01:00:35:17 - 01:00:39:02):
Or I mean, have we thought about Carlos Withers?
**Chip** (01:00:39:04 - 01:00:47:04):
That's true. Yeah, yeah. Carl Withers is, I mean, great, great fake boxer who's no longer with us.
**Thomas** (01:00:47:06 - 01:00:48:15):
Oh, I hate that.
**Chip** (01:00:48:18 - 01:00:59:07):
And then, of course, we curse Carl Withers. And then there's actually with the name Withers. Bill Withers, the singer songwriter. Great guy. I don't know how tall Bill Withers was. We'll have to find out.
**Thomas** (01:00:59:08 - 01:00:59:19):
God, we'll have.
**Chip** (01:00:59:19 - 01:01:04:14):
To find out. There ain't no sunshine when you don't know how tall Bill Withers is.
**Thomas** (01:01:04:15 - 01:01:08:07):
Because it's not illuminated. There's a dark spot in our knowledge.
**Chip** (01:01:08:08 - 01:01:11:15):
Exactly.
So dynamic. Derek. Speaking of Daniel Radcliffe, who's five foot five, Derek lives at Radcliffe Donkey Sanctuary on in the UK. No relation to Daniel Radcliffe Daniel Radcliffe is in no way related to that. I'm sure he would be a fan of it, a supporter of it, I don't understand.
Yeah, you already got the name. You don't have to spend any more money on name changes.
**Thomas** (01:01:35:14 - 01:01:41:22):
Get all these done. You got the tallest donkey in the world, the living, the tallest living 5.5ft from hoof to withers.
**Chip** (01:01:41:23 - 01:01:57:22):
Get on that before it's too late. Now, on the same day that dynamic Derek was given the record as the world's tallest donkey. Yeah. One of his stablemates, a donkey named bamboo.
**Thomas** (01:01:58:00 - 01:01:58:19):
Okay.
**Chip** (01:01:58:23 - 01:02:27:08):
Was confirmed to have the longest ears on a living donkey. Wow. Not only do you have the tallest donkey, but you have the longest ears on a donkey. Verified by the Guinness Book. Yeah, a donkey named bamboo. Now, there was a third donkey, Thomas, at that sanctuary that also was named for a world record that day. Okay. His name was Big Kielbasa, but I'm not sure what he got the record for.
I have no idea.
**Thomas** (01:02:28:07 - 01:02:31:05):
I wonder if him and longitude might have anything in common.
**Chip** (01:02:31:05 - 01:02:39:17):
You never know. You never know, Thomas. So congratulations to Derek, the tallest living donkey hazard of you, buddy.
**Thomas** (01:02:39:18 - 01:02:52:20):
Congratulations, Derek. And wow, two, three world record holders on one donkey sanctuary. Pretty amazing in terms to having world class donkey care. It appears they also have a ruler at this sanctuary.
**Chip** (01:02:52:21 - 01:02:53:18):
They have it all.
**Thomas** (01:02:53:19 - 01:03:06:02):
They have it all. They're checking it out. And another thing, another tie into a former world record. We've talked about the longest ears. Bamboo. Do you remember a record you covered? The fastest growing plant on earth.
**Chip** (01:03:06:02 - 01:03:07:04):
Was the bamboo.
**Thomas** (01:03:07:05 - 01:03:11:11):
It's a world. I mean, this is like an episode of Seinfeld. Things are just coming together.
**Chip** (01:03:11:11 - 01:03:15:00):
It all comes together at the end. I love it when an episode comes together.
**Thomas** (01:03:15:03 - 01:03:31:22):
